The third fine and antique sale of the year at Tennants could prove to be one of the largest ever held at the Leyburn based family firm of auctioneers and valuers.
What has already been a record year for the firm will be capped off with over 1800 lots of the finest antiques, paintings, ceramics, jewellery and works of art to be offered in the North of England this year.
One of the highlights of the sale is a collection of fine Pilkingtons Lancastrian Lustre Pottery, now much sought after and rare, an illustration of which graces the front cover of the catalogue. This stunning art pottery was made at Clifton Junction near Manchester in the early 1900s and was decorated by renowned ceramic artists such as Richard Joyce, William Mycock and Gladys Rogers. The pieces were discovered during the valuation of the estate of an architect from Newmillerdam near Wakefield, his house being a time capsule of the last hundred years. As well as rare Lancastrian Pottery his collection also included one or two rare items of Royal Doultonware by George Tinworth, with a prototype figure of a jester being one of only ten known in existence.
As is often the case with small properties, the same small end terrace house yielded many treasures, including a fine library of books on architecture, building and design which will be offered in the spring.
The Autumn Catalogue Sale will be held at the Leyburn salerooms on Thursday 18th to Saturday 20th November, and will go on view the week prior starting on Sunday 14th November.
