**He was from Shotton Colliery and West Hartlepool. He was awarded the Military Medal in 1917 (London Gazette 26th April 1917) and presented with a gold watch by the Durham Colliery Mechanics Association.

**He served with the North Russia Expeditionary Force with the Middlesex Regiment as Acting Sergeant G-95910 and commissioned to the Royal Engineers 20th December 1918. He purchased the Freedom of the City of London on the 24th June 1918.
