A 19th Century Silk and Wool Embroidered Picture of Herstmonceux Castle, Sussex, depicting nuns and other figures in the foreground with cattle watering in the moat surrounding the castle in a maple frame, 55cm by 44cm

Herstmonceux is one of the oldest standing brick buildings in England, built in 1441 by Sir Roger Fiennes, Treasurer of the Household of King Henry VI, as a palatial residence be-fitting a man in his position, at a cost of £3800. The Castle was restored in the early 20th century and from 1957-1988 became the home of the Royal Greenwich Observatory. In 1994 it was bought by Alfred Bader and is now used as an International Study Centre.
