An Oak Thirty Hour Longcase Clock, signed Wm Porthouse, Penrith and Made for Thomas & Ann Dixon 1776, with broken arched pediment, turned pillars, shaped trunk door with mahogany crossbanding, plain inset pilasters, crossbanding to the plinth and upon later feet, 12-inch arched brass dial with Roman and Arabic chapter ring, later hands, dial centre with engraved scroll work and signed in the cartouche, date aperture, the arch with rolling moonphase and inscribed to the arch Thomas & Ann Dixon 1776, four pillar movement with anchor escapement and rack striking on a bell, 246cm high

William Porthouse is recorded working in Penrith in the mid 18th century, he died in 1790. He is known to have made dials like this engraved with the owner's name and date. It is thought these clocks were purchased as wedding or anniversary presents.
