Jean I Pènicaud is credited with introducing the grisaille technique to Limoges enamel and this was then quickly adopted by all the enamel painters of Limoges, including Jean II Penicaud, whose monumental figures and stylised cloud scrolls are similar to those seen in the present plaque.
