Sold with photocopies of old photographs of the Sergeant Major.

Sergeant Major Alfred Best (later promoted) born Yorkshire 1865. He fought in the Boer War where he won the Distinguished Conduct Medal (the medals can be seen in the Coldstream Guards Museum, Birdcage Walk, London). The photograph shows Sergeant Major Alfred Best on horseback, and is the vendor's great-great grandfather.

Born at Greenock, Renfrewshire, and brought up in Northern Ireland attending Belfast College of Art 1928-1931 and the Royal Academy Schools. He lived in France and Italy, helping to run an art school at Pont-Aven Brittany. His first one man show was at the Leger Gallery in 1942. After the war Scott taught at the Bath Academy of Art.

Inscribed with the artist's own shorthand and dated "1833", pencil drawing with shaped corners, 10.5cm by 19.5cm

First exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1791. In 1796 he went to Dublin and was appointed Director of Life Classes at the Dublin Society, reorganising the Society of Artists in Ireland, later becoming its secretary. He returned to London and moved to Calcutta, visiting Dacca giving lessons to Sir Charles D'Oyly and other students. In 1825 he moved to Macao.
