Hawksbill Turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata), Three Shells, 19th century, retaining the majority of the original skeats, the largest 50cm long, 43cm wide, the smallest 32cm long, 30cm wide

Hawksbill Turtle shells have been the primary source of tortoise-shell material, used for decorative purposes, and for such items as tea caddies, jewellery and furniture inlay. The flesh has also been valued. This is now a critically endangered sea turtle, and is protected by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, and it is illegal to capture and to trade in Hawksbill Turtles and products derived from them. As these specimens pre-dates 1947 they are outside the application of current legislation

Provenance: Laurence Cadbury Collection. Part of a collection of mounted big game trophies brought back from Alaska, North America and East Africa in 1913 and 1934 by Laurence Cadbury. Many of his specimens were mounted by Rowland Ward, and were sold by James & Lister Lea in a marquee at "The Davids", Hole Lane, Northfield, Birmingham 17th and 18th November 1988. This was lot 738 and was illustrated in the catalogue.

A full mount Alaskan Brown Bear was sold in the same sale as lot 736, and this example is recorded in Rowland Ward's Records of Big Game, vol II. This example was probably shot during the same hunting trip.
