Provenance: John Edward Taylor (1830-1905) was proprietor of the Manchester Guardian; his London home at 20 Kensington Palace Gardens housed his magnificent art collection until his widow's death on 10th May 1912, whereupon it was consigned to Christie's, for sale over several days during July of that year
