Lot 755

Dame Laura Knight RA, RWS, RE, RWA, PSWA, DBE (1877-1970)
"Skating Ballet"
Signed and inscribed, pencil, 27cm by 37.5cm

This sketch is likely to have been executed in the early 1930s when Laura Knight was touring with Bertram Mills' Circus. Laura discovered the new craze of ice-dance at Blackpool. In fact the 'ice ballet' was often included as an act within the circus programme. For Laura it seemed to offer a new means of executing 'quick fire sketches of figures in movement' (BCM Laura Knight: a Life p. 169). She never developed this interest however, as she was dissatisfied with the effect of dancers with skates.

We are grateful to Dr. Barbara Morden for her assistance in cataloguing this lot.

Lot 766 Thumbnail

Lot 766

Norman Stansfield Cornish (1919-2014)
"Mare and foal"
Signed, pastel, 51.5cm by 72cm

Provenance: From the artist's family
Exhibited: University of Northmbria, NC488

Norman's paintings and drawings throughout his career are dominated by people and places, and the shapes they made, which fascinated him as an artist. Early in his career he was advised by Bill Farrel at the Spennymoor Settlement to "paint the things around him and what he knew".

Animals occasionally feature in Norman's work; the tired pit pony, horses tethered near allotments, dogs in the streets and whippets and greyhounds with their owners in pubs.

The South West Durham landscape in the post war years was dominated by the location of coal mines and their communities. The same environment also merged into areas of rural interest with farms and woodland. Norman would occasionally walk between the villages and towns observing the natural environment which was an antidote to life underground.

This is a very rare an unusual example of his work and the shapes made by the mare and foal which engaged his interest.

We are grateful to the Cornish family for providing the accompanying text for this lot.
