Eagle and bear is a homophone for heroes in Chinese. In northern China the word for bear is often used with the word for dog preceding it, "a dog-bear". Eagle and dog are both fierce and aggressive but the dog has no choice about remaining loyal to his master.

Dung-Shien was a very handsome young man and a great favourite of the Emperor. The story illustrates a favourite Chinese theme "Human Weaknesses of Persons in High Places".
