**London Gazette 23.07.1918 - Lieutenant West was awarded the Military Cross for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during several days of intense rearguard and village fighting. By setting a high example of cheerfulness, courage and skill he was instrumental in delaying large bodies of the enemy during a retirement, on several occasions permitting his detachment to be almost completely surrounded, and withdrawing it at the last possible moment with a minimum of casualties. He displayed not only courage of a high order, but considerable military ability as a leader and tactician
