Dame Laura Knight RA, RWS, RE, RWA, PSWA, DBE (1877-1970)
The dressing room
Signed, pencil and grey wash, 28cm by 19.5cm

This sketch of ballet dancers dressing and applying make-up is likely to be from the 1920's when her subject matter was dominated by anonymous representations of women dancers in the dressing room (Timothy Wilcox Laura Knight at the Theatre 2008). Laura was eager to take advantage of drawing `from the life', having been denied this as a female student at art school. She was also fascinated by the transformation of the performer into character; the physical woman into the `sylph'. Her study here shows that metamorphosis at two levels: the application of make up before the mirror and the physical woman assuming her costume.

Dame Laura Knight RA, RWS, RE, RWA, PSWA, DBE (1877-1970)
Study of a seated female figure
Signed, pencil and crayon, 27cm by 18.5cm

This is a charming study of a member of the corps de ballet leaning forward as she completes her make up - although it is not known for which ballet. Here the handling of the fabric and texture of the dress captures the anticipatory presence of the dancer as she assumes her role. Laura was fascinated by costume and design and after the ballet Russes left London in 1924, she was invited to participate in a smaller ballet company run by Stanislas Idzikowski, for whom she designed costumes for the ballet "Le Roses" (Wilcox, pp78-81). These costumes are in strong primary colours of rose and intense blue, illustrating the influence of the avant garde introduced by the Ballet Russes by Picasso and Bakst. The drawing is likely to be from this time because it shares qualities in the handling of the figure and fabric motifs that can be seen in Laura's dressing-room portraits of Idzikowski himself and his leading ballerina Vera Savina of 1924.

Dame Laura Knight RA, RWS, RE, RWA, PSWA, DBE (1877-1970)
Study of a Russian Dancer
Signed in pencil, 27cm by 17.5cm

In her drawings and sketches at the Ballet Russes Laura aimed to capture the essence of dance in the graphic line - a technique transforming physical mass into `rhythm, repetition and line, accented beat and cross rhythm, as in music'.

In this drawing we see Nijinsky as the `golden' slave in Fokine's ballet Scheherazade. Designed by Leon Bakst, the ballet created a sensation when it was produced by the Ballets Russes in Paris 1910 and London 1912. With gold body paint and bedecked with jewels, Nijinsky commanded the stage with his performance - one of decadent sensuality, erotic and violent. Laura's drawing communicates both movement and stasis in the dancer's iconic pose suppressed energy and the dangerous grace of Nijinsky's performance.
