Advice for collecting Advice for collectingCompared with many other areas of collecting, clocks and watches can sometimes be quite daunting to the novice. Unlike a piece of furniture or a bronze, what you see is definitely not all that you get. Behind the dial is a working mechanism and consequently there are some guidelines to be followed: - Always buy the best in your price range. This will make it easier to sell at a later date. - Try to specialise in one area of collecting i.e. provincial longcases, bracket clocks, carriage clocks, or certain centuries, 17th, 18th or 19th. - If buying retail or at auction, always try to get a condition report or ask a specialist for advice. - Try to get involved with the local network of horological collectors or become a member of a society. Order specialist journals to keep abreast of the current market and what is fashionable.
