Head of Picture Department
Allan Darwell started his career with Trafalgar Galleries of St James’s, London, after spending three years at Wakefield Art College. A number of years later in London and a short spell with a gallery in Harrogate, he joined Hinson Fine Paintings in Sheffield and spent nineteen years with Ernest Hinson. He then joined Phillips in Bath as Head of the South West Regional Picture Department covering the whole of that area and later took on the responsibility of the Midlands and Chester.
After several years based in Bath, he moved to their operation in Leeds and became the Yorkshire Regional Head of Paintings, still maintaining his connection with the Midlands and Retford Salerooms. Phillips then merged with Bonhams and after eighteen months with Bonhams, he joined Tennants in Leyburn, in July 2003 as Head of the Picture Department.
