After training as a restorer, Nigel joined Sothebys in Chester, working in the European Ceramics department, and became an auctioneer at the age of twenty-two. He then joined Phillips at their Bath salerooms as a Ceramics Expert before moving to the Nottinghamshire firm of Henry Spencer & Sons as a Regional Valuer and Representative for Yorkshire. After the takeover of Spencer’s in 1995 by Phillips, he continued to run the Harrogate based office, before leaving to join Tennants, the largest UK regional saleroom, as an Associate Director.
