Tennants, having sold a rare Irish painting by Sean Keating in the Spring for a record £400, 000, are again to sell major rare works sourced from private estates throughout the British Isles. The sale, to take place over two days on 22nd and 23rd November, will contain the valuable surplus contents of Tyninghame House, Dunbar, East Lothian on the instructions of Sir Timothy and Lady Clifford. Amongst the treasures form this fine Scottish residence will be a portrait by Philippe Mercer (1689 – 1720) of Sir William Lowther and Katherine Ramsden, dated to 1742. This major work is expected to fetch £70,000 - £80,000. Consigned from a vendor now resident in Paris a fine oil painting by Edward Stott entitled “The Bathers” is expected to fetch in excess of £30,000 - £40,000. Nigel Smith, resident valuer in Harrogate who took the painting in for sale said, “this is a fantastic painting in amazing condition, I don’t think there is a better example of this artist’s work in a public collection in the UK”. Bought many years ago by a Bradford wool baron the painting found its way to Paris with the daughter of the original purchaser and has been brought back to Yorkshire for sale. In the jewellery section one of the finest pieces to be offered provincially in recent years is a fine 19th century diamond set tiara centrepiece with a central stone of over 8ct in weight. The total content of diamonds in the piece is over 30ct. This rare jewel consigned privately from Leicestershire was brought into the Tennants Oakham office in Rutland on a routine valuation day. Sarah Hardy, Head of Jewellery at Tennants, said “this will be the strongest selection of jewels Tennants have been asked to sell in their 100 year history, and is expected to fetch between £80,000 and £100, 000”. A rare German 17th century cupboard called a “Hamburger Schapp” was discovered in a private house in Harrogate. The piece dating to around 1680 and carved with fine reliefs taken from the Old Testament and figures allegorical of the noble arts is of gigantic proportions and would have originally graced a wealthy merchant’s home as an expression of his wealth and status. “This piece is definitely not for the average semi” says Nigel Smith from Tennants, “it is anticipated that a wealthy continental buyer will be in the market for this piece, the quality and scale of it is amazing”. Carrying an estimate of £12,000 - £18,000 the piece could end up fetching considerably more.
