Saturday, 2 December Textile Post Sale Report

 

 

In a sale of 177 lots of Dolls, Dolls Houses, Rocking Horses, Teddy Bears, Costume, Samplers and Textiles, Tennants saw some high prices being realized on Saturday, 2nd December. The highlights include:

Samplers

A fine Sampler by Mary Taylor dated 1734 (lot 577) which was a wonderful example of 18th century needlework and embroidery and in excellent condition sold for £3,500 (estimate £800-£1,200). From the same estate there were also some bisque head dolls including a Kammer & Reinhardt doll estimated at £400-£600 which sold for £850.

A memorial Sampler (lot 576) commemorating the Death of Princess Charlotte who died on 5th November, 1817 sold for £600 (estimate £300-£500). Worked in cross-stitch by Thirza Gibbs, dated March 6 1829, this very detailed work showed a central image of Princess Charlotte’s tomb, flanked by crowned lions and exotic birds with a verse below.

A Sampler and fabric ledger book (lot 529) displaying cotton fabric samples and descriptions dating from 4th July 1846 to 12th December 1849 sold for £400 (estimate £60-£80).

Costume and Sewing Accessories

Costume from the 1940’s and 1950’s (lot 519) including gents suits, ladies coats, a Liberty red paisley print dress, lingerie, hats, gloves and shoes sold for £880 (estimate £100-£150).

A selection of gull-wing designed Knitting Sheaths (lot 538) sold for £350 (estimate £70-£90).

An Orphan Doll

A  German Orphan Doll (lot 435) bearing the mark of Lenel Bensinger & Co, Mannheim dressed by the girls of the Charity School at Ledsham, West Yorkshire in approximately 1914 sold for £270 (estimate £60-£80). 

Googly Eye Dolls

Two German Googly Eye Dolls (lots 437 and 440) sold for £1,050 (estimate £300-£500) and £520 (estimate £150-£200) respectively.  Googly dolls have side glancing eyes that were either fixed or painted and were produced from the start of 20th century.

Dolls House

A 19th Century ‘Villa’ townhouse (lot 444) sold for £450 (estimate £250-£350).

The saleroom was filled with both keen collectors and also dealers in Textiles, Teddy Bears and Dolls as well as those with an interest in sewing and sewing accessories, samplers from the 18th Century, and period costume.
