Costumes, Textiles, Dolls & Teddy Bears Post-Sale Report |
||
A large collection of antique and later textiles, dolls and teddy bears were sold at Tennants on Saturday 29th July in a specialist auction which saw some high prices being made. A large part of the Textile Collection came from a family in Tyne and Wear, who had lovingly stored and kept all their family’s 19th Century and later costumes, hence their condition was excellent. Items included a Victorian cream silk wedding gown, with long lace sleeves, ruffle trims and wonderful horseshoe appliqués which realised £220 in the sale. The top price was for two 19th Century dresses selling for £800, one of which was a printed cotton day dress circa 1830. It had wonderful voluminous drop sleeves with fitted cuffs and was designed to be worn off the shoulder. In the Dolls Section the top prices made were for a 33cm Kammer and Reinhardt bisque character doll which sold for £1100 and a 28cm oriental bisque head doll which sold for £400. In the Samplers Section an 1835 oak framed sampler by Elizabeth Cooban, depicting Soloman’s Temple sold for £340, a maple framed sampler by Mary Evans dated 1828, depicting a house with cattle grazing, swans on a pond and religious verse sold for £320, and an unframed 18th Century band sampler with well executed foliate designs including acorns etc, worked in blue, green, cream and brown threads sold for £210. Other items in the sale which made good prices included three 19th Century knitting sheaths sold individually, a carved love token sheath, a carved sheath with foliate decoration and named, and another with a small glazed window with the name Meggy Taylor, all sold for £220 each. The next Textiles, Dolls and Teddy Bear Sale at Tennants will be in December 2006.
