Perhaps The White House?

American painting to be sold at auction

In North Yorkshire, England

With the US elections underway it is timely that a painting of a Washington Landscape with a house, said to be The White House, is coming up for auction.   By an artist of the American Provincial School from circa 1810 this painting has seen many presidents come and go since it was painted  It depicts the house set in trees with troops nearby, a figure and horse in the foreground, said to be Mr Paul Revere (of Longfellow Fame).  This oil on canvas is unframed and is estimated to sell at auction for £1,500-£2,000.

The painting was consigned to Tennants Auctioneers by a private gentleman in Cumbria, England who says that many years ago an international auction house in New York examined a photograph of this picture and was very excited at the prospect of selling it. However, the client at that stage did not proceed with the sale, giving the opportunity today for Tennants to be able to offer this work in its Important Autumn Catalogue Sale on 23-24th November 2006.

Unfortunately, there is no provenance or history with the picture and the only detail the vendor can remember is that he purchased the work over a decade ago in a small antique shop.  Nevertheless, this is a charming work which could be an important historical painting.
