Stamps Bring High Prices at Auction
|
||
Stamps have also always been collected as an investment and no less so today with the market very buoyant and collectors ever-keen to find rare and unusual stamps. Tennants saleroom was packed yesterday with eager stamp collectors from far and wide and some very high prices were achieved. A British £5 orange stamp from 1882-1883 with a well centered postmark and a very feint blue crayon line across the top left corner (lot 149) saw some strong bidding and eventually sold for £2,185 (estimate £600-£800). Also creating a great deal of interest was an exceptional British stamp collection from 1840 to 1970 (lot 139) which sold to a private collector for £10,350 (estimate £3,800-£5,800). Also, a 1929 £1 stamp sold for £575 (estimate £300-£400) due to its perfect condition and having never been mounted (lot 159). Other highlights included a collection of mint Commonwealth Stamps (lot 56) which sold for £900 (estimate £100-£150), a collection of stamps from 1840 to 1918 (lot 126) which sold for £1,100 (estimate £180-£280). Entries are being invited for Tennants next Stamps, Postcards, Cigarette Cards and Ephemera Sale which will be held on Wednesday, 14th February 2007.
