In September 2017, Tennants Auctioneers are delighted to be offering for sale by auction A Collection of Traditional and Sporting Prints belonging to the late Dr Bob King, as part of their Country House Sale. Depicting Gentlemanly sporting pursuits and interests from grouse shooting to hawking, prized stock animals to racing, the collection represents a uniquely British genre of art.
Dr Bob King, a former country General Practitioner from Hawes, North Yorkshire, was for over thirty years a collector and a connoisseur of fine sporting and agricultural prints. A true enthusiast of British Sporting Art, with an almost obsessive passion for the work of 18th and 19th century engravers, Bob had a particularly keen eye for quality and detail. Always on the lookout for a rare version, or simply a copy of a print that he didn’t yet have, Bob was scrutinizing the salerooms and buying prints right up to the very end of his life. Now part of his treasured collection is being offered for sale, to be enjoyed and appreciated by many other enthusiasts of the genre.
The collection comprises 106 lots of framed and glazed 18th and 19th century prints, after such notable British Sporting artists as George Stubbs, John F Herring, John Nost Sartorius, Francis Sartorius, John Ferneley, Henry Alken, Lionel Edwards and Sawrey Gilpin. Estimates for the lots in the collection range between £60-80 and £300-500.
