William Lowther was a coal magnate whose seat was at Lowther Castle in Cumbria which the family had owned since the Middle Ages. It was largely demolished in the 1950's and a large auction sale of family treasures was held in 1947. He was MP for Appleby in 1780 and later for Carlisle; Cumberland and finally Rutland in 1802.

Sir Thomas Lawrence painted a three-quarter length portrait of William Lowther in c.1809/12 ( Garlick No. 514) and there is also an unfinished half-length portrait of his wife Augusta, Countess of Lonsdale ( Garlick No. 515)
