A modest looking native North American woven pouch, measuring just 10.5 by 12cm sold for £4,800 (plus buyer’s premium) in Tennants Auctioneers’ Militaria & Ethnographica Sale on 13th
June. By repute, the pouch was collected in America in the middle of the 19th
century by an ancestor of the vendor. Woven with a geometric design in red, black and white, the pouch possibly can be attributed to the Houron tribe. Estimated at £100-150, the pouch was subject to a heated bidding battle, finally won by a telephone bidder.
Other highlights of the sale included an impressive silver gilt and enamel collar chain for The Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George, G.C.M.G. Knight Grand Cross, awarded to Lieutenant General Sir Herbert Charles Chermside in 1899. Chermside went on to serve as the Governor of Queensland from 1902-1904. The chain, which was sold alongside its original fitted Garrard & Co case, sold for £2,500 (plus buyer’s premium).
A particularly strong selection of swords were entered into the sale, and selling strongly was a possibly early 17th
century English rapier, with unusual square-section bars to the crossguard and stamped FRA to the blade, which sold for £1,100 (plus buyer’s premium). A Victorian Mameluke Officer’s Sword to the 9th
Lancers made by Prosser of London sold for £1,000 (plus buyer’s premium) and a late 17th
century Scottish basket hilt broadsword sold for £950 (plus buyer’s premium).
An extensive collection of Third Reich photographs attracted interest too, with a lot comprising a German Aviation Photograph Album c.1926 and two Third Reich period albums documenting Luftwaffe subjects sold for £700 (plus buyer’s premium), and a German Third Reich period photograph album documenting life aboard a U-boat sold for £650 (plus buyer’s premium).
The sale resulted in a total hammer price of £91,360 for 475 lots, with an 86% sold rate.
