Modern Interiors

Top names in furniture design drew strong bidding in the Modern Interiors Sale on 2nd June, with iconic chairs by Charles & Ray Eames leading the sale. The ‘Eames Chair’ is a design classic, first offered for sale in 1956 and produced until the 1990s. Inspired by the traditional English club chair, Eames designed their chair as a luxury item – intended to be both stylish and comfortable. Two examples from the 1960s were offered for sale, with one chair selling for £4,000 (plus buyer’s premium), and a chair and ottoman selling for £3,700 (plus buyer’s premium); showing that the demand for these classic leather and rosewood pieces continues to flourish.
Also selling well was a 1960s example of the Scandia chair, designed by Norwegian furniture designer and architect Hans Brattrund for Hove Mobler. Made of laminated moulded wood on a wire frame, the stylish swivel chair sold for £1,400 (plus buyer’s premium) against an estimate of £500-700.
Designer sofas also fared well in the sale, with a seven piece lounge suite by David Gascoigne selling for £4,600 (plus buyer’s premium), and a pair of contemporary ‘Agnes’ walnut bookcases by Kay & Stemmer for Scp sold for £600 (plus buyer’s premium) against an estimate of £150-250.
Tennants are currently accepting lots for the next sale of Modern Interiors on 20th October 2018, please contact them on 01969 623780 or for details.
