Tennants’ sale of Fine Wine and Whisky on the 22nd April saw good, strong results with a sale total of £115,795, and a sold rate of over 90%, reflecting the buoyancy in the market for good Bordeaux, Burgundy and Whisky.
Good, solid prices were achieved for fine wines, and the top eight lots in the sale came from a particularly good private collection; two cases of Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1990, an outstanding vintage, sold for a combined hammer price of £10,200, and six cases of Paul Jaboulet Aine Hermitage La Chapelle 1990 sold for a combined hammer price of £20,000.
The most eagerly fought over lots in the sale were those from north of the Border. Very high prices were achieved throughout the whisky section, with vintage bottlings from pre-1980 very popular amongst bidders – such as a bottle of Tomalin 1964 23yr old whisky which sold for £450 (estimate £100-150).
However, it was the selection of Macallan on offer that demonstrated the strongest performance. Macallan is currently seeing a surge in price due to its relative rarity, interest from the Chinese market and from those looking to invest. The top lot of whisky was a bottle of The Macallan 1958/1959 25yr old Anniversary Malt, bottled in 1985. Sold alongside its original presentation case with certificate, it achieved a hammer price of £2,400 against an estimate of £1,500-2,000. Also selling well with a hammer price of £1,800 (estimate £1,000-1,500), was a bottle of The Macallan Royal Marriage Malt Whisky, which was bottled to commemorate the marriage of Price Charles and Diana with a blend of malt whisky distilled in 1948 and 1961, the respective years of their births. This whisky appears occasionally at auction, and prices achieved at Tennants have risen over the last five years: the first bottle sold at Tennants in 2012 achieved a hammer price of £1,200.
The sale resulted in a total Hammer Price of £115,795, with 91.6% of the 298 lots sold.
