Fine Jewellery at Tennants has gone from strength to strength in recent years, and the forthcoming Spring Fine Art Sale on 24th & 25th March continues the trend with a particularly strong array of remarkable diamonds, old and new. Fine examples of modern diamond rings from leading houses Cartier and Boodles mix with elegant Georgian and Victorian pieces in this 150 lot sale.
Jewellery Specialist Melanie Saleem said of the sale, ‘We have an especially good number of fine and attractive period jewels; nice Victorian pieces, pretty Georgian necklaces, and of course classic diamond rings. Period pieces are particularly popular at the moment, and we are finding they sell well and are eagerly fought over in the saleroom’.
Three good period diamond rings stand out, each with not only good size stones, but with attractive, unusual settings. The earliest is a pretty Georgian Diamond and Blue Enamel ring (total est. diamond weight: 3.75 carat), from a private Yorkshire collection, estimated at £3,000-5,000. From the same collection is a striking Early Victorian Emerald and Diamond Two Stone Twist Ring, with an old brilliant cut diamond (diamond weight: 3.80 carat) and an octagonal step cut emerald, which is being sold with an estimate of £15,000-18,000. Another good Victorian ring comprises three old cut diamonds in the form of a clover (total est. diamond weight: 5.50 carat); heavy with Victorian symbolism it carries an estimate of £7,500-9,500.
At the other end of the spectrum are two fine modern diamond rings from Cartier and Boodles – names that always draw much attention at auction. From Boodles is a Platinum Diamond Ring with a round brilliant cut diamond within a halo of brilliant cut diamonds (total est. diamond weight: 3.40 carat, colour G/H, clarity SI1/SI2), estimated at £25,000-30,000. There are a number of certificated jewels by Cartier in the sale, but of particular note is a very fine diamond ring with an oval brilliant cut diamond, the shoulders set with graduated brilliant cut diamonds (total est. diamond weight: 3.40 carat, colour E, clarity VVS2). Oval cut diamonds are perennially popular, and this fine example is estimated at £65,000-75,000.
Finally, a modern Platinum Diamond Ring with a very high quality emerald cut diamond, flanked by two graduated baguette cut diamonds on the shoulders (total est. diamond weight: 2.90 carat, colour E, clarity VVS2) is entered for sale at £25,000-30,000.
