Tennants of Leyburn’s Militaria & Ethnographica Sale on 9th August is set to include a private family collection late 19th century and early 20th century military uniforms and military accoutrements relating to the Westmorland & Cumberland Yeomanry, the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment and the Duke of Lancashire’s Own 3rd Lancashire Militia.
The collection includes a comprehensive Early 20th Century uniform that belonged to Major G O Sandys of the Westmorland & Cumberland Yeomanry, with rank badges for Lieutenant and Major (Estimate: £2,000-3,000). Unusually complete, the uniform includes two full dress tunics, a mess dress tunic and waistcoat, boots, hats, belts, and accessories, all housed within original japanned metal trunks and cases. A full length oil portrait of Major Sandys wearing the uniform was recently sold at Tennants.
Also of note is an earlier uniform, which belonged to Lieutenant Colonel T M Sandys of the 3rd (Militia) Battalion The Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. Again the uniform is unusually comprehensive, including a number of tunics, breeches, caps, spurs, gloves and much more.
Oonagh Drage, Militaria Specialist at Tennants Auctioneers says ‘It is so unusual to see such a complete and extensive collection of uniforms from one family. The uniforms had been packed in their original metal trunks, and each item was carefully wrapped in tissue paper.’
A fully illustrated catalogue for the sale of Militaria & Ethnographicas will be available on our website leading up to the sale, alternatively, please contact the salerooms for further details.
