The Modern & Contemporary Art Sale at Tennants, Leyburn on 25 February sees a wide range of artists and movements brought together in a carefully curated sale.
Coming under the hammer is part of a significant Private Collection of Modern British and Contemporary pictures, with works by Gordon Hopkins, John Kingerlee, Kitty North, John Lowrie Morrison (“Jolomo”) and other Modern and Contemporary artists. Of note is a dynamic and painterly portrait by Paul Wright (b.1973), “Head of a Versatile Man” (oil on canvas, 120 x 100cm), which is estimated at £400-600. The highlights of this fine collection will be auctioned in Tennants’ Spring Fine Art Sale on 24-25 March 2017.
Also included in the February sale are works by Dame Laura Knight, Duncan Grant and several watercolours by Edith Lawrence. Lawrence was a member of the Grosvenor School of Art, whose partner Claude Flight was a pioneer of the lino print and director of the School. In July 2016 Tennants sold an important private collection of some 81 prints and other works by the Grosvenor School of Art, including many works by Edith Lawrence. The sale unsurprisingly produced some exceptionally strong results. Lawrence’s optimistic depictions of modern life remain relevant in our world today and continue to be enduringly popular and highly collectible.
Tennants have a long record of selling works by Jonathan Armigel Wade, however this sale will include two works sold under Wade’s pseudonym Jonny de Vins for the first time. Jonathan Armigel Wade, a successful contemporary British artist based in Lincolnshire, is best known for his ‘curvispective’ depictions of rural landscapes and street scenes where familiar subject matter is distorted as if looking through a lens. Wade’s distinctive paintings have long been sought after at auction; however, the artist has also been painting abstracts for several years under the name of Jonny de Vins. The two abstract oil paintings by de Vins, ‘Spring Time’ and ‘Time Passing’, each carry an estimate of £200-300.
A fully illustrated catalogue will be available on the website leading up to the sale.
