Rare Beatrix Potter first edition & iconic artwork for Ladybird Books up for auction

A first edition of Beatrix Potter’s Appley Dapply’s Nursery Rhymes is set for sale in Tennants’ Book, Maps & Ephemera Auction on 2nd August (Estimate: £800-1,200). The little volume, complete in its original dust wrapper, is in exceptionally good condition. Beloved by generations of children, Appley Dapply was the first book that departed from Beatrix Potter’s usual narrative tales. Potter was very fond of rhymes and had been gathering together verses and illustrations since the publication of her first book. However, in 1917 her publishers, Frederick Warne & Co, ran into financial difficulty and Potter offered them her rhymes as they could be published straight away. Appley Dapply was a huge success and saw the sale of over 20,000 copies from October – December.

The sale also includes Part II of the John Berry Collection of original illustrations made for Ladybird books by artist and illustrator John Berry (1920-2009), Part I of the collection having sold in April with great interest. A window into a vanished world, these nostalgia- filled pictures present the optimistic ideals of the 1960s and 1970s. Ladybird books entertained and educated generations of children. Established as an imprint in 1915 with an aim to provide ‘pure and healthy’ literature for children, Ladybirds’ distinctive small hardback books combined simple yet engaging information vividly brought to life with colourful illustrations. John Berry was one of Ladybird’s foremost and longest serving artists; he illustrated over 35 books for Ladybird between 1961 and 1978, including the popular ‘People at Work’ series and the ‘Hannibal the Hamster’ series.

The illustrations will be sold in group lots comprising 2 – 5 illustrations, estimated at between £150 and £600 per lot.

A fully illustrated catalogue for the Books, Maps & Ephemera Sale will be available on our website, www.tennants.co.uk leading up to the sale, alternatively, please contact the salerooms for further details.
