Tennants is the only UK auctioneers with a dedicated fan department. The department specialises in antique Asian and European fans, made from a wide variety of materials including tortoiseshell, metal, enamel and mother-of-pearl, and it has a particular expertise in lace fans.
Specialist auctions are overseen by Consultant Mary Cooper who has an extensive knowledge of antique fans and current market values. Recent high-profile sales have shone a spotlight on antique fans and growing areas of collecting include Art Nouveau and Art Deco fans, fans made by prestigious retailers such as Alexandre, Kees, Duvelleroy, Fabergé and artists such as A. Thomasse, fine Chinese carved fans, and European fans depicting rare subjects.
Notable recent sales have included the two important single-owner sales of The Blackborne Collection of Antique Fans, which achieved a combined hammer price of £160,000 and saw fans sold to avid collectors across the world.
Consultant Mary Cooper, who is based in France, will be available in Leyburn on special Fan Valuation Days only, which will be listed on our Events Page, but fans may be consigned during our regular valuation hours for her attention.
