Display: Fashion, Fragrance & Fans

1st June 2019 to 1st July 2019
  • A display curated by The Fan Circle International

The fan, as a fashion accessory, has been around for hundreds of years, first devised by those living in hotter climes as a simple tool for keeping cool. As craftsmen discovered new materials and skills, the fan subsequently developed into an object of beauty.

The display will present fans on the theme of Fashion, Fragrance & Fans, exploring changing fashions in the depictions of flowers and the evolution of the fan in the 20th century into a medium for advertising fashion, beauty and in particular fragrance. Examples will be on show of fans promoting the likes of L. T. Piver, a French perfumier who produced a huge range of perfume advertising fans.

Many of the fans on display will be included in the October Fan Sale at Tennants Auctioneers.

The display will be located in a cabinet in the Lower Gallery, on view from 1st June – 1st July. The Garden Rooms galleries are free to enter, and opening times can be viewed here.

Tennants’ Fan Specialist Mary Cooper will also be giving an Introduction to Fans: A Beginners’ Workshop on 25th June. For full details click here.
