Exhibition: Rethinking the Sampler

27th April 2022 to 15th May 2022

We are delighted to welcome back the Richmond and Leyburn Creative Stitchers, the members of which used to form the Richmond and Leyburn branch of the Embroiderers Guild, for their third exhibition at Tennants.

This Spring, the stitchers invite you to Rethink the Sampler, a genre of embroidery deeply rooted in history that has undergone many revivals and is still being reinterpreted today. The stitchers will explore both traditional and contemporary samplers with a wide variety of intricate pieces. The exhibition will also include a display of antique samplers, which have been loaned from private collections or are awaiting sale at Tennants Auctioneers.

Samplers were originally produced as a practical way for girls to practice the needlework skills they would need in their role running the home.  Over the years they evolved into intricate, decorative pieces often far exceeding their practical origins, and eventually became the much-loved cross-stitch sampler still made today.

The exhibition is free to enter.
