A Retrospective
At 85, Michael Bilton is still changing and evolving as an artist, but the constant in his work is his desire to explore his relationship with Swaledale through paint.
For over thirty years, the dale has been both his home and his muse. The rugged hills that tower over his home in Grinton have never failed to inspire him, with all their elemental majesty. In Swaledale, Michael, who has a background teaching art at degree level, found the freedom to break from more academic modes of painting that had informed much of his earlier work.
The exhibition will afford a unique insight into the mind of an artist and his gradual progression from representational to abstract landscape painting and how events in his life, from loss to the devastating flood in July 2019 which hit his home, have affected his work.
OPEN AFTERNOON
To celebrate the opening day of the exhibition, join Michael from 2-4pm on the Upper Gallery on 18th March.
