A rare concert ticket signed by The Beatles sold for £7,500 when it came under the hammer in the Toys and Collectables, Sporting and Fishing Sale at Tennants Auctioneers on 22nd July (all figures exclude buyer’s premium). The ticket was for a concert by The Beatles, held at the Grosvenor on Prince of Wales Road, Norwich on Friday 17th May 1963, at the height of Beatlemania.
The signatures of Ringo Starr, Paul McCartney, John Lennon and George Harrison were obtained by the vendor of the ticket, when she attended the performance aged just 19. Having been right in front of the stage, she was perfectly place when the band jumped down after their set to greet fans and luckily, she had her ticket to hand to be signed to become a treasured memory.
Tennants’ Toys and Collectables Specialist Kegan Harrison said of the sale: “Tickets for The Beatles concerts are rare and collectable in their own right, but to have one signed by all of the Fab Four and with such good provenance made the lot exceptionally rare”.
Strong prices continued throughout the sale with both traditional and more modern vintage toys and models selling well, with good prices seen for Star Wars Figures, and O Gauge and Hornby OO Gauge model trains. One of the top lots of the trains was a Hornby (China) OO Gauge ‘Murdoch’ Locomotive from Thomas & Friends, which sold for £1,000.
The Sporting section of the sale sold well, too, with an extensive archive of black and white sporting press photographs selling for £4,000. A small archive of memorabilia from York City’s 1954/55 FA Cup Run sold well above estimate at £900. The archive included programs, souvenir editions of the Yorkshire Evening Press, and press cuttings, all relating to one of York City’s greatest seasons. Amongst a collection of 18th and 19th century racing passes were such highlights as a Newmarket Racing Pass from the ‘Hon. Ponsonby Moore’ (sold for £1,500), a Barham Downs New Stand Racing Pass from ‘Sir Charles Farnaby Bart.’ (sold for £650, and a Doncaster Racing Subscription Pass from ‘Lt. Gen. Julian Byng’, who was a Field Marshall in the British Army (sold for £550).
The sale achieved a total hammer price of £75,195 for 500 lots and an impressive 90% sold rate.
