Classic cars pull in the crowds

14th May 2018.

Tennants’ sale of Motor Vehicles and Automobilia on 13th May attracted a record turn-out of motoring enthusiasts to watch nearly three hundred lots go under the hammer. With lots ranging from collectable vintage car badges selling for £40 to fine motors – there was something for everyone in the sale.

The top lot of the sale was a 1984 Porsche 911 Sport Carrera Convertible, complete with cherished number plate, which sold for £40,000 (plus buyer’s premium). The 911 has been a motoring icon since it was first introduced in the early sixties, and this model was the last of the second generation of the car.

The Land Rover has been a stalwart of British motoring, and the marque had just celebrated its 70th anniversary, and the three examples in this sale caught the eye of enthusiasts. A Defender 90 XS TD from 2015, in pristine, as new condition sold for £37,000 (plus buyer’s premium), whilst two vintage models, a 1974 Series III and a 1982 Series III sold for £12,000 (plus buyer’s premium) and £6,100 (plus buyer’s premium) respectively.

Solid prices were achieved for a select group of motorbikes in the sale, the highlight of which was a 1998 Ducati 916 Biposta which sold for £6,500 (plus buyer’s premium). The bike was previously homed in a Welsh motorcycle museum, and was signed by the legendary superbike racer Carl Fogarty.

Vintage enamel advertising signs and car mascots proved as popular as ever, but it was one of the more unusual lots in the Automobilia section that came out on top. Two full size crash test dummies with life-like heads sold for £3,200 (plus buyer’s premium); the ‘male’ dummy was inscribed ‘Motor Museum 7, Coventry’, and the ‘female’ was inscribed ‘The Lady Cyclist… Museum of Road Transport, SW3’.
