Two private lots of antique family samplers head up the Fashion, Costume and Textiles Sale at Tennants Auctioneers on 14th August, one hailing from a family that inhabited Swaledale for centuries, and one from the descendants of famed 18th century silversmith Hester Bateman.
The Swaledale Samplers were all worked by members of the Broderick family, who owned two properties in Swaledale – Spring End and Summer Lodge, near the village of Gunnerside. The family had a significant impact on the dales from the 14th to 20th centuries through farming and mining activities, and their extensive collection of family papers are now held by Richmondshire Museum. The samplers, some of which date back to the early 18th century, have since passed down through family descent. The collection comprises 11 items and is being offered with an estimate of £1,000-1,500 (all figures exclude buyer’s premium).
The second collection comprises samplers worked by the great and great great grandchildren of the silversmith Hester Bateman (1708-1794), and other family members. Bateman took over the family silversmiths upon the death of her husband in 1760 and went on to become one of the finest English silversmiths; the business remained in operation until the middle of the 19th century. The six samplers date between 1795 and 1869 and will be offered with an estimate of £600-800.
Good furnishing textiles include an unusual Early 19th Century Patchwork Bed Cover, which has and appliqué heraldic crest to the centre, incorporation the word ‘Industry’ (estimate: £800-1,200). This is joined by an impressive and decorative 19th Century Embroidered Wall Hanging, which possibly originated in Russia (estimate: £800-1,200). Amongst the floral and architectural motifs is a Russian-style hanging incense burner. Colourful and delightfully naïve is a set of Circa 1920s/30s Egyptian Revival Applique Panels, which are decorated with pyramids, sphinxes, camels and figures (estimate: £100-200).
Colourful world textiles include Central Asian and East Asian costume dating from the late 19th and early 20th century, including Chinese robes, vestments and embroidered sleeve bands including a vibrant 19th century Chinese Green Silk Skirt (estimate: £300-500), and holding memories of past travels is an Early Louis Vuitton Travelling Trunk, labelled with ‘Maj. H. Kelly, Malta’ (estimate: £500-800).
The sale will also include textiles from private collections around the country, English and European lace, Victorian and early 20th century costume and accessories, crinoline cage and bustles, early 20th century underwear and lingerie, mid-20th century textiles, buttons, shawls fabric samples and much more.
