The Country House Sale, to be held at Tennants Auctioneers on 12th September, is set to contain an array of art and antiques, many consigned from good private estates. Included in the sale is property from Ackworth Lodge in Pontefract, selected items from the Estate of Peter Haigh, Norwood Green, Halifax, and further consignments from estates in Sutton-on-the-Forest and London.
Good antique and decorative pieces of traditional furniture in the sale include a selection of period oak, such as a George I Oak Enclosed Dresser and Rack, likely made in Wales and on offer with an estimate of £600-900 (all figures exclude buyer’s premium). The sale will also include a good Private Collection of Glass Paperweights, with examples including a St Louis Mushroom Paperweight, made circa 1850 (estimate: £500-800), a St Louis Millefiori Paperweight of the same date (estimate: £400-600), and a Baccarat Red Clematis Paperweight (estimate: £400-600).
One of the more unusual clocks in the sale is a Rare American Calendar Wall Regulator, made circa 1870 and signed Seth Thomas Clock Co.; the clock maker was active in Thomaston, Connecticut, and the clock is being offered with an estimate of £500-700. A good table clock comes in the form of a Rosewood and Brass Inlaid Chiming Table Clock, which was retailed by Sharman D. Neill the Belfast jewellers circa 1890 (estimate: £600-800). One of the earliest clocks in the sale is a Mahogany Eight-Day Longcase Clock, signed Christopher Pennington, having been made in Kendal circa 1780 (estimate: £300-500).
In amongst a good offering of pictures are a group of works by Norwegian artists from a private collection, including Milking Time by Anders Monsen Askevold (1834-1900) (estimate: £400-600), and two landscapes by Gustav Wentzel (1859-1927) (estimate: £300-500 each). Dogs are a perennial favourite subject matter amongst buyers, and the sale includes “Flat-Coated Retrievers” by the popular canine artist John Trickett (b.1953) (estimate: £700-1,000), and a charming work entitled Waiting for Master by Alfred Hartley (1855-1933) depicting a dog sitting on a doorstep (estimate: £200-300). Further interesting works include rural scenes such as Farmer Droving Cattle Over a Bridge by Edward Hersey (b.1948) (estimate: £200-300) and Haymaking in a Summer Landscape by Robert Noble (1857-1917) (estimate: £250-400).
