Preview: Militaria & Ethnographica Sale 17th September

The Militaria and Ethnographica Sale at Tennants Auctioneers on 17th September is set to include a good selection of rare and collectable medals. Amongst which are highlights such as a Late 19th/Early 20th Century KCB Group of Six Medals and the Miniatures awarded to Brigadier General Francis Charles Carter of the Northumberland Fusiliers, including the Most Honourable Order of the Bath Knight Commander Neck Badge, Afghanistan Medal 1878-80, India General Service Medal 1854-95, and 1914 Mons Star (estimate: £1,800-2,500 all figures exclude buyer’s premium). A Royal Victorian Order Knight Commanders Neck Badge and Breast Star is offered with an estimate of £1,000-1,500, and a Rare Boer War/First World War Group of Medals to Nursing Sister Blanch S Wood, British Red Cross Society and Order of St John of Jerusalem are offered with an estimate of £700-900. Also on offer is a Collection of 19th Century Agricultural Medals, which will include a Victorian Provincial Silver York Agricultural Society Medal, with a rare York hallmark; it was awarded to Robert Crowe of Speeton, Bridlington in 1851 for the second price in the Stock Sheep category (estimate: £150-200).

An interesting selection of good quality cap and collar badges, shoulder belt plates and helmet plates, many to Indian Army regiments, including a Victorian Officer’s Shoulder Belt Plate to the 19th (1st Yorkshire North Riding) Regiment of Foot (estimate: £500-600), a Victorian Shoulder Belt Plate to an Officer of the 76th Regiment of Foot (estimate: £800-1,200), and a Regency Shako Plate to an Officer of the 19th Foot (1st North York Regiment) (estimate: £600-800). From Indian Army regiments are a Victorian Officer's Belt Clasp to 66th Bengal Native Infantry (estimate: £120-180), a Great Indian Peninsula Railway Officer’s Pouch Belt Plate (estimate: £150-200), and a First World War Officer’s Silver Pouch Belt Plate to the 90th Punjabis (estimate: £150-250).

A Victorian Suit of Armour in the 15th Century Style (estimate: £1,600-2,000) will be joined by a good offering of uniforms and headgear, which include a First World War Royal Flying Corps Uniform, which was worn by Flight Lieutenant William Sidebottom and sold together with other items from the same family (estimate: £3,000-4,000), and a Second World War Airborne Troops Denison Smock (estimate: £800-900).

Highlights of the edged weapons in the sale include a Late 19th Century Caucasian Shasqua, a curved steel sword with elaborate decoration (estimate: £700-1,000), and Two First World War British 1868 Pattern Cavalry Lances (estimate: £250-300). Good pistols and revolvers include a Pair of Late 18th Century Flintlock Duelling Pistols by Philip Bond (estimate: £1,200-1,500), a 19th Century Five-Shot Self-Cocking Percussion Revolver by Deane, Adams & Dean (estimate: £900-1,100), a 19th Century Five-Shot Double Action Percussion Revolver by R.H. Bate Senr (estimate: £600-800), and a 19th Century Second Model Tranter’s Patent Self-Cocking Five-Shot Percussion Revolver (estimate: £800-1,200).

Finally, amongst the Ethnographica on offer are tribal weapons including good North American war clubs such as a 19th Century North American Indian Sioux I-Wata-Jinga War Club of the Custer period c.1870 (estimate: £280-350), a further 19th Century North American Indian Sioux I-Wata-Jinga War Club of c.1880 (estimate: £350-400), and a 19th Century North American Indian Apache War Club of c.1870 (estimate: £180-200).
