Rare George VI 'Coronation' Proof Set Sells for £16,500

20th November 2025.

A rare George VI ‘Coronation’ Gold Proof Set sold for £16,500 in the Coins, Tokens and Banknotes Sale on 19th November at Tennants Auctioneers. Issued in 1937, the set was one of only 5001 struck and had been in the same family collection since new. An Edward VII Proof Set 1902 sold for £1,500.

Selling well, too, was a spectacular Ancient Greek Gold Fifty Litrai Coin from Syracuse, dating back to approximately 310-306 BC, which featured a bust of Apollo on the reverse and sold for £1,400. Amongst a good selection of Victoria coins was a Victoria Penny 1887, an extremely rare variety of bun penny with narrow date and struck with dies ‘8’ and ‘H’ (sold for £1,800), and a Victoria Five Pounds 1893, a low mintage coin that sold for £4,000.

The sale achieved a total hammer price of £317,830 for 499 lots offered, and a 99% sold rate, and consignments are currently invited for the next Coins, Tokens and Banknotes Sale on 11th February.
