Many of the coins came from the eclectic collection of George Edward Lovelace Carter (1886-1974); whilst from Devon, he worked in the British Indian Civil Service before returning to England to work in property. A member of the Royal Numismatic Society and a keen amateur historian, George’s collection had remained in storage for over fifty years and provided some of the highlights of the sale. Notable coins selling well above estimate included a Roman Imperial, Livia Dupondius (Rome c.21-11AD) (sold for £700 all figures exclude buyer’s premium), a very rare Elizabeth I, Crown (sold for £4,200), and a George IV, Crown 1821 (sold for £750). Selling well, too was a USA/Hampshire 18th Century Token at £700, and an extremely fine and very rare William IV, Halfcrown Brockage which attracted interest from error coin collectors before selling for £1,600.
From other vendors in the sale, stand-out lots included a William and Mary, Five Guineas 1691, which was the top lot of the sale after selling for £6,600, and an Edward VII, Halfcrown 1908, which sold for £900.
The sale achieved a total hammer price of £240,290 for 481 lots offered, and a 98% sold rate, and consignments are currently invited for the next Coins, Tokens and Banknotes Sale on 6th May.
