Results: Fashion, Costume & Textiles Sale

A family collection of eleven antique samplers worked by the Broderick family of Swaledale were one of the highlights of the Fashion, Costume and Textiles Sale on 14^th August at Tennants Auctioneers, after selling for £1,000 (all figures exclude buyer’s premium). The Broderick family owned two properties in Swaledale – Spring End and Summer Lodge, near the village of Gunnerside. The family had a significant impact on the dales from the 14^th to 20^th centuries through farming and mining activities, and their extensive collection of family papers are now held by Richmondshire Museum. The samplers, some of which date back to the early 18^th century, have since passed down through family descent.

Antique furnishing textiles sold well throughout the sale, with the top lot being an impressive and decorative 19^th Century Embroidered Wall Hanging, which possibly originated in Russia. Amongst the floral and architectural motifs is a Russian-style hanging incense burner, and the lot sold for £1,600. An unusual Early 19^th Century Patchwork Bed Cover, which had and appliqué heraldic crest to the centre incorporation the word ‘Industry’ sold well at £1,300, and an Early 20^th Century Kalamkari Block Printed Silk Shawl depicting a Tree of Life sold for £450. A good selection of colourful world textiles included Central Asian and East Asian costume dating from the late 19^th and early 20^th century, and strong bidding resulted in notable hammer prices; top lots included a Late 19^th/Early 20^th Century Chinese Blue Silk Embroidered Waistcoat that sold for £850, and Group of 19^th Century Chinese Embroideries that sold for £700.

Amongst the costume in the sale, a stylish circa 1930s Cream Silk Evening Dress and Lamé Train sold well above estimate at £850, however, it was the undergarments in the sale that stole the show. Hailing from a private collection, the four lots of undergarments dating from the early 20^th century sold for a total hammer price of £2,150, and from a separate collection was a circa 1865 Thomson’s Red Cage Crinoline, which sold for £700.

The sale achieved a total hammer price of £40,030 with a 91% sold rate for 181 lots.
