The Scientific and Musical Instruments, Cameras and Tools Sale on 22nd October opened with a strong selection of violins and violas, which performed well throughout; leading the way was a 15 ½ inch Viola labelled ‘Forster London’, which sold for £4,000 (all figures exclude buyer’s premium). Good prices were seen across the Musical Instruments section of the sale, with further notable results achieved for a Tenor Saxophone by Selmer (sold for £850), and interesting instruments such as a Trumpet in G by F Besson (sold for £450), and a Three Valve Cornopean by Antoine Courtois (sold for £650).

Results: Scientific & Musical Instruments Sale 22 October
A very fine and rare Swiss Chalet ‘Sublime-Harmonie’ Musical Box by Mermod of France sold well at £1,300; built in the form of a log-built chalet, the box played eight airs and is of a type which comes onto the market rarely.
A wealth of film cameras and accessories, mostly from a private collection, again saw strong bidding and prices throughout, with notable results achieved for a Bolex H16 Reflex Cine Camera (sold for £1,300), and a Leica M3 Camera Body (sold for £750).
Leech jars continue to be popular decorative curiosities, and a good Staffordshire Pottery Pharmacy Leech Jar and Cover, made in the first half of the 19th century, sold for £1,700. The jar was impressed with the stamp of M. Tomlinson, Hulme, which was listed in an 1852 historic trade directory under “Plaster Spreaders, and Dealers in Druggists, Sundries”.
