A New World Record?

29th November 2018.

It is thought that a new world record for a Hornby Dublo Locomotive was set in Tennants Auctioneers’ Toys, Models and Collectables Sale on 28th November.

A Pre-War Hornby Dublo Clockwork 0-6-2T Southern 2594 Locomotive sold for £6,000 (plus buyer’s premium). Southern Railway is always a very sought-after category by locomotive collectors and this, together with the excellent condition of train, attracted three determined bidders who battled it out to win this prized example.  Despite not having its original box, the train was accompanied by Southern Railway Open and Goods Wagons and a Brake Van, and original wrap and clockwork key.

Tennants’ Toys, Models & Collectables Specialist Kegan Harrison said of the sale, ‘This really is an exceptional price – and we think this must be a new world record’.

Further lots of model locomotives and railwayana also attracted bidders, with a Marklin for Bassett-Lowke O Gauge 4-6-0 Jubilee Class Locomotive selling for £1,600 (plus buyer’s premium), an Atlantic Coast Express Locomotive Headboard selling for £1,500 (plus buyer’s premium) and a Brass Header Plaque from Sledmere & Fimber Singnal Box on the Malton and Driffield Junction Railway selling for £850.

Elsewhere in the sale, strong prices were achieved for a large collection of Ogdens’ Guinea Gold Cigarette Cards (£2,200 plus buyer’s premium), and good examples of diecast toys sold strongly with a Dinky Gift Set 990 Pullmore Car Transporter with Four Cars selling for £1,400 (plus buyer’s premium).
