Family Coin Collection Leads Sale

A private family collection of coins was amongst the highlights of Tennants Auctioneers’ Coins, Tokens and Banknotes Sale on 10th November, when it sold for a total hammer prices of £13,710 (plus buyer’s premium) for the 40 lots.

The collection was started by the vendor’s great grandfather at the end of the 19th century and encompassed a wide range of coins with some rare examples. The collection had been passed down through the family and kept in the same envelopes and bags ensuring the coins remain in very good condition. Highlights from the collection included a Roman Diva Faustina Senior Gold Aureus, issued by Antoninus Pius in honour of his deified wife in AD141, in Very Fine or + condition that sold for £1,900 against an estimate of £300-400. Also of note was an Italian States Sardinia Gold 100 Lire 1834P that sold for £950, and a Roman Valens Gold Solidus that sold for £600.

Elsewhere in the sale, which achieved an impressive 99% sold rate, was an Elizabeth II 4-coin gold proof set from 1989 issued for the 500th Anniversary of the First Gold Sovereign, which sold for £5,800. A Queen Anne Guinea from 1714, from after the union with Scotland, sold for £1,100, and a Victoria 1887 ‘Golden Jubilee’ Gold and Silver Set sold for £3,000.

The sale resulted in a total hammer price of £98,605 for the 272 lots and a sold rate of 99%.
