An extensive private collection of Cigarette Cards sold for a combined hammer price of £11,910 (plus buyer’s premium) in Tennants Auctioneers’ Toys, Models & Collectables Sale on 3rd April. It was both the size and quality of this collection that drew interest from bidders. The collection included a good quantity of early pictorial cigarette cards and Edwardian cigarette cards, which are always popular amongst collectors. After being well viewed, the cards were sold in 14 lots to three competing bidders in the room. The top lot from the collection was a quantity of card including Ogdens ‘Flags and Funnels of Leading Shipping Lines’, Gallahers’ ‘Allies Flags’, Churchman ‘Lawn Tennis’, Cope ‘Boxing Lessons’ and others, which sold for £2,200 (plus buyer’s premium).

Elsewhere in the sale a postcard for Port Paradise Hotel and Villas, signed by Elvis Presley during his stay there whilst filming ‘Follow That Dream’, sold for £500 (plus buyer’s premium). A Fry’s Chocolate Ebonised Display Cabinet sold well too, at £1,200 (plus buyer’s premium). Specialist Kegan Harrison commented on the cabinet ‘This was a wonderful example of an advertising cabinet and in really nice condition. It is unusual to find a cabinet such as this with the original mirrored shelves’. A kit built Rob Roy 3 ½” Gauge live steam locomotive with tank and wagons also sold strongly at £950 (plus buyer’s premium).
The sale resulted in a total Hammer Price of £75,575 with 91% of the 529 lots sold.
