International Coins Boost Strong Sale

11th August 2022.

High levels of international interest drove prices for foreign coins and banknotes in Tennants Auctioneers’ Coins, Tokens and Banknotes Sale on 10th August. The top lot of the sale, far exceeding presale estimates, was a1970 Gold Saidi Rial from Oman, which sold for £6,000 (plus buyer’s premium). Estimated at £1,200-1,500, the gold rial was struck to commemorate the introduction of the new Saidi currency in 1970, and was decorated with a border of dhows, the traditional sailing vessel of Oman.

The sale was also notable for the high prices achieved for USA coinage, and with numerous American bidders many of the lots will now be repatriated to their homeland. Highlights include a scarce 1903 Morgan Silver Dollar, one of the rarest San Francisco Mint Morgan dollars in proof like condition that sold for £1,900 against an estimate of £300-500. A ‘Liberty Cap’ Quarter Dollar from 1820 sold for £650, a ‘Liberty Cap’ Dime from 1820 sold for £650, and a ‘Liberty Cap’ Dime from 1834 sold for £550.

Amongst the USA banknotes in the sale, an 1869 $1 ‘Rainbow Note’ sold well at £800, and a lot comprising 4 Civil War Period Banknotes sold for £150.

The sale achieved a total hammer price of £222,700 for 506 lots, and a 99% sold rate.
