Remembering Lowry

20th April 2026. By Francesca Young

2026 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the death of L.S. Lowry, an artist synonymous with the North, and one who had a profound influence on regional representation in British Art.

One of the most widely recognised artists of the 20th century, Lowry had an extraordinary ability to capture the essence of everyday life in an industrial landscape. Born the son of an estate agent in suburban Manchester, an early artistic inclination led his parents to enrol him in private art classes, and he later attended both the Manchester College of Art and the Salford School of Art. Indeed, Lowry’s classical and academic training extended over a 20-year period, refuting the popular claims that he was a naïve or primitive artist who could only paint ‘matchstick men’. He simply found a style that allowed him to express his view of the world in his own unique artistic voice.

Lowry was a conscientious observer of everyday life, and his well-documented humble and straight-forward character underpins much of what he went on to create. He led a simple existence that concentrated around the everyday, continually sketching and documented industrial Manchester and its surrounding urban environs for over sixty years. In an extraordinary body of work, he produced insightful and expressive renditions of individuals and activities, portraits, townscapes and landscapes which perfectly capture the atmosphere and sense of a place.

Lowry had an astonishing impact on the development of Northern Art, and a direct influence on many of the most important artists in the region, such as Harold Riley, Geoffrey Key, and Helen Bradley.  Lowry was instrumental in giving the North a distinctive artistic character and voice - one that is only set to get louder.

Two Lowry sketches are coming up in the Modern and Contemporary Art Sale on 13th June, Figures on a Street (estimate: £8,000-12,000 plus buyer’s premium), and Street Scene with Children and Dogs (estimate: £7,000-10,000 plus buyer's premium).
