Results: Country House & Jewellery, Watches and Silver Sales

Over 1,000 lots came under the hammer on 12^th September in Tennants Auctioneers’ Country House Sale and Jewellery, Watches and Silver Sale, offering an array of fine art and antiques, many of which hailed from private collections across the north of England.

One of the most eagerly anticipated sections of the Country House Sale was a selection of works from the estate of much-loved North Yorkshire artist Robin Furness, a distinguished North Yorkshire artist whose work primarily celebrated the landscape, wildlife and sporting traditions of the British countryside. Throughout a career spanning more than half a century, he developed a highly recognisable style that relied on careful understanding and affection of rural life, capturing the beauty of the landscape and its varying weather patterns as well as the character of the people and animals that inhabited it. The section achieved a 100% sold rate and notable lots included “Bedale – Friar Ings”, which sold for £460 (all figures exclude buyer’s premium). Also selling well amongst the pictures in the sale, which achieved a total selling rate of 97%, were Portrait of ‘Chantesley’ Standing in a Stable by Tom Carr (sold for £2,000), and from a collection of Norwegian paintings Milking Time by Anders Monsen Askevold (sold for £1,600).

Good antique furniture in the sale included a 19^th century Ash and Elm Stick-Back Windsor Armchair (sold for £900), and decorative furnishing pieces included a Pair of French Life-Size Terracotta Figures of Seated Boxer Dogs dating from the late 19^th/early 20^th century (sold for £1,100), a Tabriz Carpet made in North West Iran (sold for £1,800), and a Copper Roll Top Bath by William Holland (sold for £2,800). Clocks with unusual movements or that offered different features sold well throughout, with highlights including a Rosewood and Brass Inlaid Chiming Table Clock retailed by Sharman D Neill of Belfast (sold for £1,300), and a 20^th century Brass Atmos Clock by Jaeger LeCoultre (sold for £1,400). Amongst the works of art in the sale a Herbert Minton & Co. Parian Figure of a Highlander well above estimate at £1,700 and similar English Parian Figure depicting Perseus and also possibly by Minton sold for £1,500.

In the Jewellery, Watches and Silver Sale, the demand for good Georgian Irish silver continued when a Pair of George II Irish Silver Candlesticks with the maker’s mark SY Dublin 1726 and associated nozzles sold well at £3,200. Further good lots of silver included a Set of Four Victorian Silver Entrée Dishes by Howard and Hawksworth of Sheffield, sold with stands for £6,000, a William IV Silver-Gilt Snuff Box by Nathaniel Mills of Birmingham (sold for £700) and a Scottish Provincial Silver Plate-Mounted Inkwell by Ferguson and McBean of Inverness (sold for £1,000).

Pretty and unusual antique jewellery in the sale included a vivid Enamel Brooch made circa 1905 modelled as a butterfly sold for £1,500, a slightly earlier incarnation of insect jewellery in the form of a Garnet and Diamond Brooch made circa 1880 sold for £800. Animal jewellery continues to perform well, and a circa 1920 Citrine and Diamond Stick Pin sold for £500. Further interesting lots included a Split Pearl and Diamond Hair Slide/Brooch (sold for £1,600), and a Diamond Three Stone Ring (sold for £2,000). A selection of good vintage and luxury watches included a 1970s Bulova 18 Carat Gold Astronaut Mark II Wristwatch that sold well at £2,000, a circa 1990 Longines Stainless Steel Hour Angle Wristwatch that sold for £750, and a limited-edition Tag Heuer ‘Pink Floyd 1989 World Tour’ Lady’s Bi-Metal 2000 Series Wristwatch that sold for £850.

The Country House Sale achieved a total hammer price of £200,200 for 615 lots and an 89% sold rate, and the Jewellery, Watches and Silver Sale a total hammer price of £239,010 for 436 lots and a 92% sold rate.
