A Bing for Bassett-Lowke Live Steam Gauge II Locomotive Midland Railway and Tender was the top lot of Tennants Auctioneers’ Toys, Models, Collectables and Sporting Sale on 30th July, selling for £3,000 (plus buyer’s premium). The locomotive was sold with its original receipt, a rare occurrence that showed that it had been purchased on 31st July 1923 for £15/15/0, two Bassett-Lowke catalogues and a selection of assorted accessories. A further locomotive that sold well above estimate was a Hornby Series O Gauge E220 Special Locomotive for Southern Rail, which sold along with its tender in boxes for £1,600.

A small collection of original vintage film posters sold well, too, with highlights including ‘Kind Hearts And Coronets’ (1949) selling for £1,800, and ‘The Lavender Hill Mob’ (1951) selling for £1,300. Further lots of vintage advertising in the sale included a pair of Facchino Ice Cream advertising figures, modelled as a boy and girl holding over-sized cones, sold for £1,200.

The Sporting section of the sale included the Harry Swales Collection of memorabilia. Harry Swales MBE (1926-2019) was a well-known and respected sport’s agent who worked as an agent for the English team for ten years and for footballers such as Kevin Keegan, Bryan Robson, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes. Top lots from the collection included an England v. Northern Ireland shirt from 1979 signed by the likes of Kevin Keegan, Emlyn Hughes and Peter Barnes that sold for £650, and a collection of Various Football Shirts and Scarves including those for Southampton Wembley 1976, a Halifax Town scarf and a Ryan Giggs Testmonial Golf Shirt that sold for £1,700.

Amongst a good offering of fishing equipment in the sale was a Framed List of Artificial Yorkshire Trout Flies, with descriptions of dressings, tying instructions and examples of 36 flies. The frame was mounted with a dedication to J. Todd (1861-1945), Masham, and the lot sold for £950.

The sale achieved a total hammer price of £58,780 with an 86% sold rate for 411 lots.
