Classic and vintage cars, motorcycles and automobilia are to be sold at Tennants Auctioneers on 5th September, in the North Yorkshire saleroom’s first Motor Sale of 2020.
The earliest car in the sale is a 1927 Austin ‘Chummy’ (estimate: £13,000-15,000 all prices plus buyer’s premium). The Austin ‘Chummy’ was one of the most popular cars of its age. From the 1950s comes a 1956 Jaguar XK140 in white (estimate: £40,000-45,000) and a 1951 MG TD in red (estimate: £16,500-18,500).
Further highlights of the car section include a concours restored 1961 Jaguar MKII Saloon in red (estimate: £45,000-50,000), a 1967 Rolls Royce Two-Door Saloon in blue (estimate: £25,000-35,000) that was previously owned by Yorkshire and England cricketer Fred Trueman, a 1965 Mercedes Pagoda 230 CL Coupe in white/black (estimate: £20,000-25,000), and a 1980 Panther De Ville Saloon V12 Automatic (estimate: £14,000-18,000). The Panther De Ville was produced by British speciality vehicle maker Panther Westwinds from 1974-1985 in a luxury ‘neo-classic’ style, and this example has been tucked away in a garage for fifteen years, and only used for a couple of weddings.
A good range of motorcycles are led by a 1971 Triumph T120R in concours restored condition (estimate: £12,000-13,000), and a Rudge Whitworth ‘Special’ Model 1930 (estimate: £10,000-12,000), which has been owned by the vendor for 20 years. Rudge Whitworth were known for their innovations in engine and transmission design, and their company motto was ‘Rudge-it, do not trudge it’. Also of interest is a Scott Flying Squirrel 596cc first registered in 1965 (estimate: £6,500-8,000).
Automobilia is a growing area of collecting, with buyer’s drawn to the iconic design of car mascots, enamel petroleum advertising signs and other colourful and eye-catching paraphernalia. Already stirring interest having been exhibited in Tennants galleries, is a large format framed advertising poster for the Salmson 10HP car from the 1920s, adorned with a young woman in a stylish driving outfit leaning against the bonnet of the car (estimate: £2,000-3,000).
A private collection of vintage signs includes a rare sign for Palmer Cord Tyres, made by Hancock and Corfield Ltd or Mitcham, and an Esso Auto Diesel Depot sign, both offered with estimates of £600-800. A good range of car mascots are on offer too, such as a rare 1920s Art Deco Wild Swan mascot, designed by Francis Bazin (estimate: £500-700).
Buyer’s will also have the opportunity to purchase personalised car registrations, including those for ‘XUP 1’ (estimate: £7,000-10,000) and ‘XUP 2’ (estimate: £3,000-5,000).
Always a draw for motoring fans, Tennants public viewing days on 2nd – 4th September will be open with social distancing guidelines in place for the safety of visitors and staff.
